This is a new series of small scale maps at a scale of one inch to the mile. More than 130 titles are now available, and about three new ones are coming out each month. The maps all include historical notes.
The one inch to the mile map is probably the most famous of all the series published by the Ordnance Survey. Work started on it in the late 18th century and the first map, of Kent in four sheets, was published by William Faden in 1801. Four years later the Ordnance Survey started publishing the maps themselves, beginning with Essex.
With the possibility of Napoleonic invasion, early emphasis was on southern England which was surveyed by 1820. By the middle of the century the survey covered the area south of the Preston-Hull line and these original 90 maps are normally known as the Old Series.
Other scales, the six inch, 1:2,500 and town plans were now taking priority and not until 1874 was the whole of England and Wales covered at the one inch scale. The later maps, and the revisions of those originally published, were smaller sized maps and are often known as the New Series. In theory 360 maps covered England, Wales and the Isle of Man, although several coastal sheets were combined. They were published in two major forms: hill-shaded and with contours. These latter maps are offered as reprints here.
